Loring Smart Roast manufactures coffee roasting equipment that uses its patented Flavor~Lock Roasting Technology™ to produce coffee with a much better taste than conventional, old-fashioned processes. The smokeless Flavor~Lock process seals off the coffee from ambient conditions and gently roasts the coffee beans in an atmosphere virtually free of oxygen, the enemy of great taste. The superb taste of coffee roasted using Flavor~Lock technology is attested to by many of the world’s leading artisan roasters and simple measurements such as by Agtron.

The Loring Smart Roast concept is a unique hybrid roasting technology that cuts greenhouse gas production by up to 80%, lowers emissions and reduces oxygen during the roast.

Developed in the USA, the hybrid roaster is the brainchild of Mark Loring Ludwig and his team, which introduces a new style of coffee roasting using patented technology that eliminates the need for an afterburner. The afterburner has traditionally been used to burn-off particulates in the exhaust to achieve cleaner emissions. However this has resulted in high energy usage and wasted heat in the exhaust gases – an expensive, environmentally damaging and inefficient solution. The afterburner, used industry-wide to eliminate the smoke created by roasting, often uses six times as much fuel as the bean roasting process itself and consequently produces up to 6 times as much CO2.
